The Mystery of Us
We humans are a mysterious bunch aren’t we? Life is full of mysteries so I encourage you to be curious every day. Why write about mystery you may ask? I have recently watched a deep and wonderful movie, “The Mystery Of Her”. I had no idea when I found it or should I say it found me what it could be about with such an odd title. The title fits though.
I am a movie buff as you may already have figured out with all the movie references in my writings. This one caught me off guard and was such a pleasant surprise as I got further into it especially towards the conclusion of the movie. This young girl, high school age, had been in a near fatal car accident and all of her past memories were lost. Obviously, she struggled to find her way and fit back in her ‘normal’ life.
Her friends and family endeavored to help her recall memories of who she was yet with all their trying, she never felt like she was who they thought she was previously. Everyone wanted the ‘old’ Ali back and she thought she did as well. However, for all her trying, there was no ‘old’ Ali. She had played soccer among other activities and asked her mom at one point ‘shouldn’t I feel something familiar if I was so good at it and loved it so much?’ But she felt no attachment to it in any way.
In rearranging her bedroom, she found a journal of her poetry and drawings she had been doing but no one knew about it. It had been her true passion all along that she hid because it didn’t fit the paradigm everyone expected of her. Isn’t that the way if can be? We become what others think about us and we pretend to do those things to please those around us not wanting to disappoint them or be ridiculed by them.
In the end, she shared her passions with a few trusted loved ones and friends who accepted her as the ‘real’ her. The mystery was who she really was in her heart and the gifts she had to share with the world. Don’t hide the real you. Be who you really are and love that part of yourself regardless of what anyone around you may think. Shine your light. I have wondered at times after watching that movie, what a blessing the memory loss of her past life turned out to be as she said in the movie she could tell from her poems she had not been happy. Profoundly stated!
I relate so closely to Ali in the movie when it comes to my writing at times. I’ve always had the talent but until my life took a hard turn, I didn’t fully embrace it. If you know your passion, run after it with all you’ve got and if you don’t, run to find it. Don’t hide away what can change a life, including yours.
